Timetables are a key issue, especially
having into account that the far you go east, the more problems you will
have to find tickets. In summer, it's strongly recommened to book in advance the itineraries
beyond Irkutsk if your destination is Beijing or Ulan Bator.
To arrange the trains is often a big headache, but at the same time, it belongs to the fun. In our case, with the stops we wanted to do, it took several days (with their nights)... Another problem is that sometimes the official timetables keep the old, soviet names. As an example of the puzzle, Yekaterinburg is still known in the charts as Sverdlovsk. Trains follow the Moscow time, independently of the local time. Once the border is crossed, trains follow Beijing or Ulan Bator time. Train nš 1/2 - ROSSIYA, is the main train that follows the route Moscow - Vladivostok, passing through the whole Siberia. Train nš 3/4, main train of the Transmongolian route, Moscow - Beijing via Ulan Bator. Train nš 7/8, good option to reach Yekaterinburg using theTransiberian main line. Train nš 9/10 - BAIKAL, one of the best choices for any part of the itinerary Moscow - Irkutsk. Train nš 15/16 - URAL, runs from Moscow to Yekaterinburgo using the Ural railway. Train nš 19/20 - VOSTOK, is the main train for the Transmanchurian route, Moscow - Beijing via Harbin. Anyway, it's convenient to check out the timetables at www.poezda.net/en/index. In this page you will find a big amount of information about the trains that crosses Russia.
